Legislative Council reform back on the agenda

More plans to revamp Tynwald’s upper chamber were revealed by a backbench MHK this morning – after he won backing from the House of Keys for reform.

Peter Karran was given leave introduce a private member's bill which would see the Legislative Council elected by the public instead of MHKs.

It would also alter the council’s pay and ban members from government jobs in departments.

He won the vote by 17 to four with its strongest opponent - Middle MHK Howard Quayle – arguing the Island has plenty of other things to worry about.
