LegCo backs changes to assisted dying residency requirement

MLCs vote in support of 12-month residency ahead of terminal diagnosis

Changes to the residency requirement for a person requesting an assisted death under proposed new laws have been supported by the Legislative Council.

Members voted in favour of an amendment to reduce the amount of time a person has to have been resident on the Island from five years to one, but added that they must have been resident at the time of their diagnosis.

It was one of a number of changes to the Assisted Dying Bill backed by MLCs in today's sitting of the upper chamber.

Rob Mercer, who proposed the residency amendment, hopes it adds greater protection against people coming to the Island to seek an assisted death.

Meanwhile, an amendment by Diane Kelsey - requiring those seeking an assisted death to be registered with a GP on Island - was also supported:
