Landmarks to light up purple to mark International Overdose Awareness Day

Manx addiction charity Motiv8 spearheads new campaign

Buildings, and landmarks, around the Island are set to light up purple tomorrow night in honour of International Overdose Awareness Day (Saturday, 31 August).

Spearheaded by addiction charity Motiv8 this year's theme is 'Together We Can' highlighting that the impacts of an overdose are 'far reaching and indiscriminate'.

Some of the landmarks turning purple on Saturday night include the Tower of Refuge and Ramsey Swing Bridge.

On the Isle of Man there were 99 drug related deaths between 2006 and 2021 based on year of death registration.

'Together we can support those who have suffered from non-fatal overdoses themselves and to families that may have had a family member or friend who has suffered a fatal overdose and most importantly to those that may be in a position where they could overdose now or in the future.' - Motiv8

Thea Ozenturk is the chief executive of Motiv8 and Jason McKee is a trainee support worker for the organisation:

Motiv8 will have a stall on Strand Street, in Douglas, on Saturday for anyone wishing to learn more about tackling addiction and the life-saving Naloxone kits.

The charity will also be promoting the purple ribbon campaign throughout September aka 'Recovery Month'.
