Jurby schoolkids return from wilderness expedition adventure

Getting ready to launch on Coniston Water

Thirteen children went to the Lake District to round off the school year

Kids from Jurby Community School have recently returned from their annual Wilderness Expedition.

Thirteen children and four mentors set off for Lowick at the south end of Coniston Water on Monday 24 June.

The expedition, in partnership with Adventureology, aimed to develop the children’s independence, resilience, teamwork and self-trust, by supporting them to step outside their comfort zone and experience challenges that would push them both physically and mentally.

Adventures included rock climbing; wild swimming, canoeing and a trip to Rydal caves.

Paul Melling of Adventureology said: "This was the seventh year I have had the privilege to be involved with Jurby Community School's big adventure. The passion for outdoor learning given by the school is fantastic and each year the children benefit from this epic challenge.

"At the start of the week, we shared memories and learning from the previous year's adventure and it was obvious that those children who were coming for the second year were reflecting back on the skills that they had learnt before and thinking how they would use them this time. I cannot praise the children enough for their efforts this week, well done to you all."

The children worked with the staff to prepare, cook and clean away all their meals, whilst also coping with a ‘digital detox’.

Will Nelson, the Schools Headteacher who accompanied the trip, thanked Adventureology for their support.
