
Talk in playground and social media reaction can deter female candidates
The impact a public backlash would have on their children is one of the factors putting women off standing for election on the Isle of Man.
That's from one of the academics behind the 'Women in Manx Politics' study, which has been examining why so few women have served in Tynwald.
Professor Peter Edge and Dr Catriona Mackie looked at why women are more reluctant to stand for election than men.
Later this week they'll host the event 'Should I stand for the House of Keys' at the Nunnery; it takes on Wednesday (2 April) between 6.30pm and 8pm.
It's part of the wider Woman in Manx Politics project supported by Culture Vannin, and will be looking at what candidates need to consider before declaring their intention to stand.
