Hundreds sign petition calling for vote of no confidence

Campaigner says public 'deserve to be listened to'

More than 700 people have now signed a public petition calling for a vote of no confidence in the chief minister and Council of Ministers.

It was started yesterday (2 March), by a man called Jonathan Smith, on the campaigning platform change.org.

You can find out more HERE.

In a comment on the website Mr Smith wrote: "I believe that the Manx public deserves to be listened to and that our MHKs are there to represent us not ignore us as what we’re asking for is too difficult.

"If enough people sign this petition then hopefully at least one MHK will accept that this is the direction of travel and do something about a vote to test the House (of Keys).

"If a vote fails that is fine as that is not the point; the point is that the people need to be listened to as we aren’t writing anyone an open cheque when you still spend money like water on things we don’t need."

The petition comes following backlash from this year’s Budget.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan has previously told Manx Radio calls for his dismissal should be part of ‘proper robust debate’ in the House of Keys and Tynwald - you can hear from him HERE

Manx Radio has contacted the Isle of Man Government for a response.
