Hospice Care Week shines a light on the retail sector

Supporters encouraged to host a 'Cakes for Care' event this week

This week (7-13 October) is Hospice Care Week, which aims to shine a spotlight on hospices, and their staff.

This year’s theme will be all about hospice retail, and the role it plays in funding the sector's services.

In the UK, government funding is said to be falling short - for the first time ever, more money has been spent in hospice shops than has been given to hospices by the state.

Here at home, Hospice Isle of Man receives £1.7 million from Manx Care towards its £6.8 million budget - leaving the charity to find the remaining £5 million through voluntary income.

Chief Executive John Knight says their shops are a huge revenue generator:

To mark Hospice Care Week, people are being encouraged to host a 'Cakes for Care' event.

There are also several other upcoming events in the calendar, as volunteer Vivian Cornelius explains:

On Friday 25 October, there will be a 60s and 70s quiz and bingo night at The Manx Legion in Douglas from 7pm.

On either 30 or 31 October, Hospice's Children's Halloween parties will take place, filled with 'ghoulish games, monster music, fang-tastic face painting, roaring refreshments and more'.

You can find a full list of events HERE.

Hospice is currently looking for volunteer drivers to drive patients from their home to their Day Unit or clinics and back again.

You would provide support for patients from leaving home, getting in and out of the car and attending their sessions in Hospice to support their wellbeing and quality of life.

You can find out more HERE.
