Horse rider injured in Archallagan wanted to highlight issue to dog walkers

Police confirm to Manx Radio no complaint has been made

Police have confirmed a horse rider who was reportedly injured after an altercation with a dog in Archallagan Plantation has not made an official complaint.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has told Manx Radio it contacted the individual after an appeal for witnesses was posted, on their behalf, on social media.

Pictures of injuries the horse sustained were shared to Facebook on Friday (20 September).

The poster claimed the incident had been sparked by a large black dog which came ‘out of nowhere’ barking and running at the horse.

It led to the horse retreating into the trees, falling and throwing the rider in the process; the dog was then kicked by the horse in an effort, the poster claimed, to ‘protect itself’.

During the incident the dog’s owner did not come forward.

The rider was said to have sustained a blow to the head, shoulder and elbow injuries, several cuts, a loss of vision and a ‘rising lump’ on their head.

It was reported that an emergency vet was required to provide sedation, stitches, injections and antibiotics to the horse.

The appeal on Facebook asked for the dog’s owner to come forward because they believed it could also need veterinary treatment.

Police have told Manx Radio they became aware of the issue through social media and not because they were contacted directly by the horse rider or the dog owner.

Officers say, when approached, the rider told them they were highlighting the issue to other dog walkers and did not need any further police support outside of that.

Dog owners are being reminded that, by law, their animals must be kept under control at all times and it is an offence if they are not.
