'Hefty fine' for Douglas man who headbutted police officer

54-year-old was arrested after making threats to 'disfigure' man

A Douglas man has been given a ‘hefty fine’ after threatening to disfigure another man and headbutting a police officer.

Richard Colvin Cain, of Edmund Chadwick Grove, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he admitted misusing the public communications network and assault.

The 54-year-old called the Emergency Services Joint Control Room, on 27 June, saying he’d ‘put a hit out’ on another member of the public and telling operators they’d find him ‘disfigured’.

When police went to his property, in the early hours of the next day, they found him heavily intoxicated; he began making threats and telling officers he’d ‘rip their throats out’.

As he was being booked into the custody suite at Police Headquarters Cain headbutted an officer in the face; no injury was caused.

During sentencing a probation officer told the court Cain had been ‘in a very distressed state’ at the time adding: “He was unable, at that point, to control himself emotionally.”

Addressing the headbutt she added: “This was appalling and Mr Cain knows that. He would like to apologise to the police officers involved.”

Fining Cain £1,100, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Magistrates told him: “This was particularly nasty. We do hope this is a one-off.”
