Health report shows our system value for money

Less than average spend brings above-average lifespan

A new study says the Isle of Man spends less than the European average on healthcare – but also enjoys a longer than average life expectancy.

A report by KPMG into healthcare compared the systems of fifteen islands from around the world.

Researchers found the Isle of Man spent just under £2,500 per person on healthcare and life expectancy here is 81 – compared to the OECD average of 80.

The report says the Island is getting value for money from its healthcare system – but admits its  data wouldn’t allow accurate comparisons between countries.

The report, entitled Key Issue in Healthcare – An Island Healthcare Perspective, will be discussed at a special conference organised by KPMG in October.

It shows our Channel Islands rivals Jersey and Guernsey both spend more per person on health, but reap the rewards with slightly longer life expectancy than the Manx.

Statistics in the document also show the Isle of Man currently has just over four hospital beds per thousand people.

That compares favourably to the Turks and Caicos Islands which have less than one, but trails behind Gibraltar and Bermuda, who both have seven.
