Greens concerned over extension of lives of Heysham nuclear plants

Facilities operate near berth used by the SPC

Green party councillors in Lancaster City Council have branded a recent Labour motion to welcome an extension to the life of the two ageing nuclear power stations in Heysham as 'deeply irresponsible'.

The Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 plants are to remain open until 2027 and 2030 respectively.

It follows an announcement from French company EDF which operates the facilities just yards from the berth used by the Steam Packet Company.

Councillor Gina Dowding says it's the council's duty to query the extension of the reactors which were designed in the 1970s and built in the 80s,

Her comments follow recent anomalies at the plants including unplanned shutdowns.
