Former infrastructure minister queries progress in gas exploration project after fourth licence extension

Manx residents discuss proposal to extract gas

Former Infrastructure Minister Chris Thomas hopes Crogga’s fourth licence extension will act as “one last chance” for the energy firm to provide the missing information required to progress the project.

However, Crogga has withdrawn its request to vary its licence after an agreement failed to be reached with the Department of Infrastructure.

The company claims the Island’s gas field could contain one trillion cubic feet of gas, with potential revenues exceeding £5 billion.

Mr Thomas says he has concerns over the timeliness of the project's progression:

Given the Isle of Man's climate commitments and status as a UNESCO biosphere, the question remains: "Should the Isle of Man extract gas from Manx waters?"
