First 'Walk of Life' for Anti-Cancer Association smashes fundraising target

Initial fundraising goal nearly tripled as Liz takes on challenges for Daz

An Andreas woman who walked nearly 15 miles around Liverpool in a challenge to honour her late husband has smashed her fundraising goal.

Darren 'Daz' Hignett died of bladder cancer the day before his 25th wedding anniversary, last year, after an 18-month battle with the disease.

Now, in his memory, his wife Liz is taking on two major walks to raise funds for the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association.

The first took her around Liverpool on 24-25 August, around key places from Daz's life before the couple moved to the Isle of Man.

Locations included where he was born, where he grew up, their first home together and the 'second love of his life' - Goodison Park.

She was initially hoping to raise £500 - but has nearly tripled that figure.

At the time of writing, her JustGiving page had raised £1,495.

Liz shared these photos from the walk with Manx Radio:

Liz told Manx Radio everyone's welcome to join her for the second walk, which will take place on-Island next month (14-15 September) to mark his anniversary:

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that the Tower of Refuge and Ramsey Swing Bridge will be programmed yellow and purple on the for Liz’s second walk.

Bladder cancer affects over 10,000 people in the UK and is more prevalent in men than women.

It is predominantly seen in the over 60s, although it can affect younger people too - Darren was 53.
