Fire service issues kitchen safety advice following flat fire callout

Crews called to flat fire on Peel Road in the early hours of this morning

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is reminding Manx residents of the importance of fire safety in the kitchen after being called to an incident on Peel Road in Douglas in the early hours of this morning.

Crews attended the scene at a flat at around 2.30am, with residents still evacuating the building as they arrived.

The team extinguished the fire, which had started in the kitchen of the basement flat, and spent two hours at the scene ventilating the property and ensuring it was safe for residents to return.

The fire service says over 50 percent of house fires start in the kitchen, and is urging the public to ensure items which can catch fire easily are kept away from the cooker, not to leave cooking unattended and keep electricals away from water.
