Driving ban for Douglas man who abandoned his car

21-year-old fled the scene and was located at home

A Douglas man has been banned from the road for 18 months after crashing and abandoning his car.

Liam Crook, of Greeba Road, admitted drink driving during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 21-year-old’s BMW was located badly damaged on Ballaoates Road at 5.11am last Sunday (22 September).

Crook had fled the scene and was located at home by police at 5.31am.

He had called 999 to report his vehicle as stolen but his account became inconsistent and he was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where he was found to be over the legal limit.

Addressing the court the prosecutor said Crook was 'very lucky' not to have been charged with perverting the course of justice or failing to report an accident.

Crook’s advocate said his client was 'shocked and panicked'.

Fining Crook £1,200, and ordering him to pay £125 prosecution costs, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him: “You’re very fortunate you weren’t facing more serious offences.”

He’ll also have to take and pass an extended driving test.
