DoI seeks new operator for incinerator from 2029

Contractor would be responsible for running and maintaining the site

The Department of Infrastructure wants to hear from potential future operators for the Waste to Energy Facility on Richmond Hill.

The current contract expires in 2029 with the DoI hoping for a transition period with the new operator ahead of that date.

The contractor would be responsible for running and maintaining the plant, overseeing contracts with third parties and managing power export systems.

The facility is described as a vital asset and a key part of the department's waste management system, processing around 50,000 tonnes of waste each year.

With the site having operated since 2004 the DoI says the primary plant will require a higher level of regular repair and renovation reflecting its age.

A secondary incinerator due for installation next year will deal with clinical waste animal carcasses and some laboratory waste.

Expressions of interest can be submitted through the government's procurement portal until 17 October.
