DoI responds to questions over axing of Cregneash bus route

Government has released figures relating to the route

Figures obtained from the Department of Infrastructure in response to a Freedom of Information request, reveal why the Cregneash bus route was no longer considered viable.

The number 28 bus came under the spotlight in Tynwald with MHKs demanding to know the reasons behind the decision to axe the route.

The response to the FOI request submitted earlier this month, confirms a substantial fall in passenger numbers between 2019 and 2023.

The request sought a break down of the ticket types including concessions and pre-paid tickets, and the cost of running the service per journey, per day.

It also asked for the schedule relating to the number of buses, times of buses and the days on which they ran.

In its answer, the DOI says 256 fare paying passengers were carried in 2023, compared with 909 in 2019.

In relation to pre-paid tickets the 2019 figure was 1,867, which dropped to 469 last year.

In almost all ticket categories the figures had declined over the four years under review.
