Work is ‘well underway’ to change the way hospital appointments are booked for patients but changes won’t come into force until April next year.

Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian told Tynwald this week that changing systems in the Patient Information Centre is an ongoing process.

She was questioned about why it was taking so long but told politicians the project – which shortens the period appointments are booked in - is on schedule.

Orthopaedics has trialled the new system - which contacts patients six weeks before their appointment instead of months in advance - before it's rolled out to other departments.

The minister said other changes, which have already been implemented, have also had an impact on the number being missed:
