DHA responds to accommodation concerns for those leaving custody

'Small cohort of people' not suitable for options available to them

There will always be a ‘small cohort’ of people on the Isle of Man who are not suitable for the accommodation available to them on release from prison.

The Department of Home Affairs says whilst it has a range of options at its disposal they aren’t always able to be utilised because of their ‘complex needs, risks or vulnerabilities’.

It follows criticism from the deputy high bailiff who said it was ‘highly unsatisfactory’ that a vulnerable defendant couldn’t be sentenced this week because he had no where to live.

In response the DHA told Manx Radio whilst it can’t comment on individual cases the Prison and Probation Service works hard to ensure offenders are released to ‘appropriate accommodation’ where available.

It added: "In cases where the relevant criteria is met Tromode House may be used or other suitable accommodation provided by Social Services.

"There is also access to hotels, hostels and other alternative accommodation for vulnerable residents - including those going through the court system or as a step after leaving prison.

"We work closely with partners in other agencies to find accommodation but the department recognises that there will always be a small cohort of people whose complex needs, risks or vulnerabilities mean they are not suitable for the accommodation that is available.

“The department is a partner in the Housing and Communities Board and this is one of the issues the board is currently exploring as part of the homelessness strategy.”
