DESC looking to introduce Island-wide ban of phones in schools

Minister hopes to implement policy in autumn term

The Department of Education says it's hoping to introduce an Island-wide ban on mobile phones in schools in the autumn.

St Ninian's High School will be restricting their use when the school returns in September.

Children have been told they shouldn't be 'seen, heard or used' at all during the school day.

The school says it's being introduced after feedback from parents, staff and 'educational professionals'.

Minister Daphne Caine says she full supports the move, and has told Manx Radio a policy is being planned to make this standard practice across all of the Island's schools:

The education minister says there'll be a small number of exceptions, including those who need access to their phones for medical reasons.

Chris Gregory runs the charity Isle of Play.

He says research has proven mobile phones can have a significant impact on children's development:

However, it's not a move that's being welcomed by all.

One parent told Manx Radio: "I don't agree with this at all and there is no good reason to introduce the ban. The school has pushed the students to use their phones for the past several years and they are now reliant on them throughout the day (Google Classroom, Gmail etc)."

Another says: "I agree in lessons but what if your child is having a bad day and wants to chat? If they’ve decided to go to a friend’s house after school/staying on for a club or study/going somewhere after school. Have forgotten something and need it for that day? Can’t see why they can’t use it at break or lunch?"

Meanwhile, some parents are supportive of the policy in theory, believe in practice it'll be harder to implement.

This parent says: "I like this idea, but until there’s enough access to learning materials for all students you can’t ban phones. My children have consistently had to use their phones in lessons because there aren’t enough iPads."

Another believes children need to be taught how to use technology: "Maybe we should be teaching students how to use their phones for educational purposes. It is after all a critical tool they will have and need. Maybe evolve the curriculum to the 21st century to incorporate digital technology into learning."

Many though told Manx Radio they fully support it, saying it's a 'great idea' and 'should have been introduced years ago'.

Minister Caine says the policy won't come into force from the start of the new school year as she wants to make sure parents/guardians and students have been communicated with properly.

However, she's hopeful it can be implemented 'as soon as possible'.
