Could party politics speed up government's work?

MLP leader says lack of consensus is slowing progress

The leader of the Manx Labour Party believes having a party system on the Isle of Man would speed up government's work.

Douglas East MHK Joney Faragher has told Manx Radio she's been surprised at how long it takes to make legislative changes since being elected in 2021.

She says having a parliament made up of mostly independent members can mean it takes time to get a consensus on proposed laws.

But, she wouldn't welcome a similar system to the one used in the UK:

However, one MHK believes the lack of party politics on the Isle of Man leads to a more stable government.

Rushen member Michelle Haywood says trying to make changes has been like 'wading through treacle'.

Dr Haywood is a political member of the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

Despite the slow progress, she doesn't think a party system is the answer:
