Costs to all-Island 20mph project 'relatively low'

Traffic road orders will be advertised from 7 March

The infrastructure minister says the cost of implementing an all Island 20 mile-per hour speed limit project is 'relatively low'. 

This week the Department of Infrastructure announced the scheme earmarking Douglas and Onchan as the next areas in focus.

Michelle Haywood says all residential roads will be reduced to 20 mph while arterial roads will remain at 30 mph except the main road that runs through Onchan; that will also reduce to 20 due to the pedestrian crossings along the route. 

She added that as they will just be 'swapping' signs, it will not be as costly as previously expected:

Flashing signs outside schools will be implemented from 10 March and new signage, and road markings, will be installed from 24 March.

The DoI says the impact of the new restrictions will be ‘closely monitored’ and traffic counts and feedback from residents will be collected.
