'Challenges' of footpath maintenance due to weather conditions

But DoI says it's made 'exciting' improvements

Footpath maintenance across the Isle of Man has been more difficult this year due to the weather.

The Department of Infrastructure says days with rain and bright sunshine have been a ‘major challenge’ as they provide ideal conditions for the growth of vegetation.

There are 300 miles of public rights of way on the Island.

The network is routinely maintained by two teams, north and south, that look after the cutting back of growth along the pathways.

It takes them two months to cover the areas.

Premier routes, which attract large numbers of walkers, are given a higher priority.

Maintenance requirements on these routes, and the less well-used footpaths, are built into programmes of work with safety critical issues always taking priority.

Reports of issues originate from a range of sources including members of the public, walking groups, DoI staff and contractors.

You can report issues with footpaths HERE or by calling 850000.
