'Manx Missile' returns to track where it all started
Sir Mark Cavendish has described his ‘homecoming’ to the Isle of Man today (16 August) as ‘beautiful’.
The most successful rider in Tour de France history undertook a lap of honour around the NSC Raceway this afternoon.
It was where the Manx Missile started cycling when he was a child.
It will be renamed in his honour.
“I started here. Many cycling champions started here. To know that I can start here and my name can carry on long after I’ve finished racing a bike – it’s an incredibly humbling recognition.” Sir Mark Cavendish
Cavendish claimed a record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win earlier this year.
His lap of honour was followed by an invitation to children on the Island to complete their own lap alongside him.
Afterwards Sir Mark spoke to Manx Radio Sports Editor Rob Pritchard:
The Isle of Man’s Lieutenant Governor has described Sir Mark as a ‘legend’.
He told Manx Radio the cyclist was a ‘fantastic ambassador’ for the Island:
Manx Radio's Christian Jones caught up with some of those who turned out to welcome Cav back to the Isle of Man at the NSC:
