Cannan: MHKs calling for my dismissal should bring concerns to Tynwald

Chief minister suggests move away from 'social media polling'

The Chief Minister says calls for his dismissal should be part of 'proper robust debate' in the House of Keys and Tynwald.

Alfred Cannan appeared on Manx Radio's Breakfast programme this morning to respond to a growing conversation around calls for a vote of no confidence.

Mr Cannan says the 'current positioning' is not helping confidence in the Island's government, and outlined the several options available to members to raise concerns:

Last week, Mr Cannan dismissed Onchan MHK Julie Edge from her role as Education Minister in a move she described as being surrounded by 'a lot of underhand operations'.

In a statement issued immediately after the so-called 'strategic mid-term change', Ms Edge, who held the post of DESC Minister since the start of Mr Cannan’s administration in October 2021, said she was ‘disappointed’ but to some extent ‘not surprised’.

This, she said, was because she was the ‘difficult woman’ who ‘regularly challenges decisions and offers the public perspective’.

But Mr Cannan this morning said the move was something that was 'under consideration for some time':
