Cannan: 'IoM needs to be fully consulted on new UK legislation'

Chief minister in London for meetings with new government

The chief minister says the Isle of Man needs to be ‘fully consulted’ on new UK Government policy or legislation which might impact us.

Alfred Cannan has held his first face-to-face meetings with members of the new administration in London.

He met with Trade Minister Douglas Alexander, to discuss plans to grow international trade, and Lord Ponsonby who has responsibility for the UK’s relationship with the crown dependencies.

Mr Cannan said: “It was good to have positive discussions with Douglas Alexander and Lord Ponsonby around future trade ambitions and our constitutional relationship.

"There are clear mutual interests in achieving economic growth through the development of new international trading relationships and in recognising the contribution that the Isle of Man makes to the UK economy.

"We also discussed the need for the Isle of Man to be fully consulted on policy or legislation that may impact on our status or infrastructure."

Mr Cannan is also due to attend the conservative and labour party conferences later this month.
