By-elections today

Peel and Glenfaba to elect new MHKs

Voters in Peel and Glenfaba have the chance to pick their next MHKs in by-elections today.

People in both constituencies go to the polls, which are open between 8am and 8pm, to choose the successors to Tim Crookall and David Anderson, both of whom have gone to the Legislative Council.

In Glenfaba Geoffrey Boot and David Talbot go head-to-head, while in Peel the four bidding for the seat are Leslie Hanson, Penny Hardman, Ray Harmer and David Pownall.

All candidates are independents, apart from Mrs Hardman, who is standing on a Lib Van ticket.

The winners will only be in the House of Keys for around 12 months at first, with an Island-wide General Election taking place next year.

Returning Officer Sally Bolton is overseeing both elections.

She says there are a number of places where people can cast their ballots in both constituencies, but they should have been allocated a specific one: (81361)

There are often lower voter turnouts at by-elections, but Chief Minister Allan Bell says it is still well worth people casting their votes, even if it only gives the winner a year as an MHK at first: (81362)
