Build elsewhere say Braddan residents

Over 300 homes will be built between Braddan School and Douglas Rugby Club

Braddan residents have hit out at news that a planning application to build over 300 new homes as well as a nursery, primary school and a neighbourhood centre has been granted

Hartford Homes made the application in 2022 for a plot of land between Braddan School and the Douglas Rugby Club.

These residents believe there's no need for more housing 'in the countryside':

News of the appeal being dismissed has raised concerns from members of the Save Camlork Campaign - who are trying to protect against 'the loss of good farm lands'.

Ken Kinrade is from the group and he's labelled the application as 'premature and a waste of time':

Stu Peters is one of the MHKs for Middle - the constituency the development falls into:

"I have always had concerns about the impact of this new development on roads and traffic in the area, but in principle (and if those concerns are mitigated) I am in favour of it.

"When I canvassed for election in 2021 one of the main comments from people on the doorsteps in the area was the lack of housing. To my mind this is a reasonable attempt to provide extra houses.

"I know that people prefer the idea of building on brownfield sites but that appears to be a much more costly option, and anyway (despite the views of some critics) the Island is in absolutely no danger of becoming a ‘concrete jungle’."

Clare Barber is the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister and made the final decision on the appeal.

She says it's really important to get involved with Draft Area Plans if there's an area of greenfield land that you want to protect:

Braddan Commissioners were one of the parties to lodge an appeal against the plans.

We've asked them for a comment following its dismissal.
