Broadway Cinema to close two nights a week

VillaGaiety blames change in audience habits and streaming services

Broadway Cinema is to close on two days each week from the end of March.

VillaGaiety, which operates the facility, blames the move on evolving audience habits in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of streaming services.

The cinema will close on Mondays and Tuesdays for regular screenings, except for occasional special events.

Wednesdays to Sundays it will operate normally, with additional family matinees programmed during school and bank holidays.

The Villa Marina and Villa Gardens will also close on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

As with the cinema, the Monday and Tuesday closures will not take place if specific events are taking place in the Villa Marina or Villa Marina Arcade, or whilst shows are being staged at the Gaiety Theatre.

A statement from VillaGaiety says it hopes the new schedule will be better aligned to current demand and will ensure the sustainability and continued role of the facilities in VillaGaiety's year round entertainment offering.
