Bottles and bonfires common firestarters

Many will remember the massive gorse blaze at Agneash last summer

Tips issued to avoid major countryside fires

As summer approaches, Islanders are being reminded to take extra care to prevent outdoor fires.

A major gorse fire was narrowly avoided in the west of the Island last week - it's not known what caused the blaze, but the recent dry weather played a large part.

Woodland blazes are a fairly common incidence in the summer months, and can take many hours to bring under control.

Last May, flames engulfed the hills around Laxey when a homeowner's bonfire reignited.

Other common causes can include disposable barbecues and discarded glass items.
