Backbench MHK hits out at LegCo after failed question time extension

Tim Glover talks about his "beef" with the MLCs that voted against

A backbench MHK has criticised the Legislative Council for vetoing an extension of question time during the latest Tynwald sitting.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew's Tim Glover thinks it's wrong that the Upper House voted against allowing Keys members from continuing to put questions to the Council of Ministers.

Two and a half hours is allocated for backbenchers to ask the Council of Ministers questions - much like they do each week in the House of Keys.

If politicians don't complete the question paper in that period an extension can be requested which MHKs and MLCs have to vote on.

At the May sitting of the court 10 members of the House of Keys voted to continue but the Legislative Council voted with a majority against.

It meant they blocked the remaining questions from being asked.

It was something that annoyed Mr Glover:

Suggestions that LegCo voted as a collective have been quickly dismissed.

Tanya August-Hanson is an MLC:

MLC Bill Henderson, the longest serving member of Tynwald, has also defended his decision to vote against extending question time:

The four other MLCs that voted against were Peter Greenhill, Dawn Kinnish, Kerry Sharpe and Diane Kelsey.

Mrs Kelsey told Manx Radio she voted against as part of efforts to get to the 'meaty' items on the order paper.

Mrs Sharpe, in summary, said "voting against involves a rapid weighing up of whether the remaining questions need answering on that very day, versus the remaining weight of the order paper".

Mr Greenhill and Mrs Kinnish did not respond to Manx Radio's request for response.
