Allergy warning issued by Island restaurants

Peanut residue present in cajun spice rub

Two Island restaurants have issued a warning to customers over contaminated products.

Jaks Bar & Smokehouse and Barbary Coast - who both operate under Jaks group - say they have been informed from a supplier one of the ingredients they use contains peanuts.

The cajun spice rub made by the company 'Favourit' is used in a variety of dishes across their menus.

Barbary Coast is asking affected customers not to order:

  • Halloumi fries
  • Fajitas
  • Spicy rice
  • Mexican coleslaw
  • Barbary house chicken gravy
  • Steakhouse sauce on the steakhouse burger
  • Jersey wrap
  • Philly cheese wrap
  • Vegan Vegas wrap
  • Las Vegas wrap
  • Fajita burger
  • Sweet curry sauce
  • Spinach and chickpea curry

Jaks meanwhile has warned against its:

  • Buffalo soldier burger
  • Halloumi fries
  • Chicken skewers

Supplier Favourit has told the company peanut residue is present in its mustard powder, which is in the rub.

In a post on social media, each restaurant said: "Obviously, we currently have stock that will be affected by this and would already have been sold on.

"We are making our own seasoning now to prevent future stock being contaminated.

"If you have any allergies to peanuts, please DO NOT order any of the above items!

"We have just been informed of this and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."

At the end of September, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) advised people with a peanut allergy to avoid consuming foods that may contain mustard, because they could be contaminated with peanuts.

It said mustard ingredients - including mustard powder or flour - can be found in dips, sauces, salads and pre-packed sandwiches.

It led to the recall of products across many food outlets, including the garlic and herb dip at Domino's Pizza.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mild to life-threatening.

Common symptoms of a food allergy include:

  • feeling dizzy
  • itchy skin or raised rash
  • swelling of the lips, face and eyes
  • coughing, breathlessness or noisy breathing
  • feeling sick or being sick
  • tummy pain
