Callister chair of committee which approved luxury flat project
An Onchan MHK claims to have identified a flaw in plans to provide affordable housing on the Isle of Man.
It comes after government made a commitment to build or facilitate 1,000 new affordable homes on the Island over the next decade.
Rob Callister is also chair of the Planning Committee.
The committee has, this month, supported a developer’s plans to build 38-luxury apartments on Port Erin Promenade.
The project is being backed by taxpayers’ money through the Island Infrastructure Scheme.
However there will be no ‘affordable’ provision included despite it being a stipulation – instead the developer is expected to pay a commuted sum instead.

In a post on social media Mr Callister said: “While the costs associated with purchasing a home are relatively straightforward, potential buyers often face an unknown element in the form of management charges, which can place additional financial pressure on those looking to buy an apartment / flat - which makes the current process difficult.
“Although apartments are generally more attainable, these unforeseen expenses can complicate the purchasing process, especially in respect mortgages because many banks would prefer freeholds and not leaseholds
“This section requires further review; however, there is nothing preventing the local authority from constructing affordable housing and applying for some or all of the commuted sum from this development to help offset costs to deliver some affordable housing in the area.”
