Actress Dame Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89.

The English actress was best known for her roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.

Her children Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens have confirmed she died in hospital.

In a statement they said: "An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.

"We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time."

The award-winning actress visited the Isle of Man in 2005 to shoot the film Keeping Mum.

Produced by Isle of Man Film, Azure Films and Tusk Productions, filming primarily took place at The Sound and Cregneash, with other locations used for all filming outside the village setting.

Alongside Smith, the film stars Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas and Patrick Swayze.
