MHK questions whether sale of telecoms provider to 'foreign government' would be 'sensible'

Understood that discussions between Manx Telecom and JT Group are ongoing

A Ramsey MHK says he doesn’t believe it would be ‘sensible’ to allow the Isle of Man’s main telecoms provider to be owned by a foreign government.

Lawrie Hooper has questioned why the Manx Government would not be interested in purchasing a profitable entity which provides ‘critical national infrastructure’.

It’s understood Manx Telecom is accepting bids for a potential takeover with JT Group, the parent company of Jersey Telecom, currently in negotiations.

Manx Radio understands that the Isle of Man Government was offered the opportunity to purchase the telecoms provider but declined.

Mr Hooper told Manx Radio it isn’t something that was raised during his time in the Council of Ministers but is concerned about any potential impact on customers here:

Manx Radio has approached the government, Jersey Telecom, and Manx Telecom for comment.

JT Group declined to comment but confirmed 'background discussions' are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Man Government said: "It would be inappropriate to provide a specific comment on any individual business which may, or may not, be going through a commercial transaction until such time as any such transaction is confirmed publicly."
