First Manx bank note smashes auction expectation

£1 sells for £24,000

An extremely rare Manx bank note has been sold for £24,000 at auction in London today.

The £1 was the first ever to be issued in November 1882, with serial number one, and is believed to be the only surviving note in existence.

It features a picture of the Tower of Refuge in Douglas harbour.

It had been expected to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000.
