Braaid Eisteddfod, an evening of music and poetry at the Braaid Hall. Starts at 7.30pm and admission of just £5 which includes supper
This coming Saturday, 11th March, sees the infamous Braaid Eisteddfod which is held at the Braaid Hall (on the Douglas to Foxdale Road)
The Braaid Young Men’s Club was established in 1937 by the young men of the village who built the hall on land donated by a local farmer. We don’t have an actual date for when the first Eisteddfod was held, but it’s probably true to say that it’s been a fair few years! There are many who still remember the Eisteddfod being held in the hall while supper was served in the, now demolished, chapel on the corner of the crossroads. There was no break for supper, members of the jam packed audience would just head down to the chapel during the course of the Eisteddfod.
While the Eisteddfod sees many of the Island’s top performers taking part, it’s also a great opportunity for those less experienced to take to the stage with a very supportive and appreciative audience. A great place to test out those Guild pieces.
We have some very talented officials with Gareth Moore being Musical Judge, Dot Tilbury is the Literary Judge and Wendy McDowell the official accompanist. Our Chairman, Chris Lyon, will (try to) keep everything in order.
There are classes for soloists, duets and groups; musical instruments; poetry and story telling – so something for everyone. And if there isn’t a class, then we’ll make one!
Everything will get underway at 7.30pm but make sure to get there early if you want a seat.
