Rodan commends Cayman elections

President led diplomatic investigation

The President of Tynwald has commended a recent general election in the Cayman Islands.

Steve Rodan visited the tiny British Overseas Territory as the leader of an official observartory mission by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association a fortnight ago.

The nation's parliament has recently introduced a new 'one person, one vote' system - which it believes makes elections more free and fair.

Mr Rodan commended the elections office team saying it was evident a lot of effort had gone into training

The election process, he said, was peaceful, with different opinions expressed freely.

However, whilst advances had been made, the mission highlighted 'a number of concerns' with several areas for improvement.

These included the secrecy of the ballot, a lack of consistent equal representation across electoral districts, and calls for 'full transparency' surrounding candidates’ election expenses.

Mr Rodan said he hoped these recommendations would be of use and concluded that 'Cayman can be confident in its processes', whether or not citizens are pleased with the results.
