The move is in response to a Tynwald resolution
The Isle of Man's wish to extend its offshore rights up to the median line between the Island and the UK has been raised by the Chief Minister with the UK Ministry of Justice.
A Manx Government spokesperson told Manx Radio that a formal response from the UK is awaited.
The move is in response to a Tynwald resolution which tasked government to commence discussions about securing more benefits from the Irish Sea.
The initiative is the result of a petition in the names of Keith Kerruish of Ramsey and Philip Craine of Douglas - which Paul Craine MLC presented to Tynwald at the end of last year.
During the debate an amendment was tabled by the Chief Minister that the petition be noted, but given that previous requests were unsuccessful, efforts should be focused on maximising the Island's existing territorial seas.
His stance was supported by other members of COMIN, but the amendment failed with Keys and Legislative Council supporting Mr Craine's motion.
