Government to keep horse trams on track, for now

Railway track record puts DoI in driving seat

The Island's historic horse trams have been saved - for the summer at least.

The Manx government has stepped in to keep the attraction running after Douglas Borough Council announced in January it would stop funding the loss-making service from this year.

The Department of Infrastructure says it will operate the trams using existing railway staff, on a reduced service from early May.

It is unclear whether that commitment will continue long-term.

Douglas council put the cost of running the trams at £250,000, but the DoI is confident it can make substantial savings on that figure.
